Suiting up for the Spring – NYC Health

Access to adequate clothing is a basic human right. Being able to wear proper clothing in tides with the seasons, or even having enough clothes in general, can make a huge difference in the human experience, mood, and overall health. It is a simple principle that all should be able to agree on; The stark difference in New York’s winter and summer temperatures only makes this fact more evident. Often, however, monetary barriers to attaining proper clothing can persist, especially when one (or a family) must focus on other things that take priority like food and shelter. The rise of new migrant shelters across NYC in the last few years has only exacerbated the incidence of these dilemmas as the human beings in these shelters are faced with tough decisions on a daily basis.

Thus, as asylum seekers find refuge in NYC and assimilate into a completely new country, where every decision matters to get off to the best start, ensuring that they have proper clothing is imperative. With the help of the neighboring Brooklyn community, through clothing donations and monetary support over the past month, today, the Wholly Medical Supplies team was able to help lessen the burden of asylum seekers by delivering roughly $1500 (131 pounds) worth of mostly-spring-oriented Women’s, Children’s and Men’s clothing and accessories to a NYC Health + Hospitals sponsored migrant shelter in Downtown Brooklyn that is a result of the Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center (HERRC) city initiative.

Our efforts today showed us how change is achievable on a large scale when communities unite for a common goal. The notion that every piece of clothing donated today will make a difference in the life of someone who needs it provides us with a sense of satisfaction and motivation to continue to do what we can to uplift our community and help those around us. Regardless of what else happens each day in our country, we must retain our humanity and understand the good that comes from making a difference in the lives of others. Thank you to everyone from the Brooklyn Community who made a clothing or monetary donation as well as NYC Health + Hospitals for assisting us in this effort and Happy Easter!
